The needs of a human being. Part 1

Updated: May 16, 2021

Needs and wants are very different.

I intend to explore the age old question - What do we fundamentally need as human beings? I would like to focus on the "needs" of a human being.

To begin with, a need is defined as:

"require (something) because it is essential or very important rather than just desirable",

or

"A condition or situation in which something must be supplied in order for a certain condition to be maintained or a desired state to be achieved".

Thus far in my life, I have often heard this question asked in various ways, and I admit that I have asked myself the same pertinent questions. It is an invasive question that must be answered, and answered with precision. As beings, we need to know the answers to the following related questions:

  1. Why was I born?

  2. What is my value?

  3. Am I significant at all?

  4. Where am I going in life?

  5. what is my purpose and context of my life?

There is a need to know the answers to the above questions. I have noticed that without these answers, it near impossible to feel a sense of personal power, purpose, fulfilment, significance and value.

There has got to be some profound meaning to our lives. How does one achieve a sense of fulfilment? I don't believe anyone enjoys the experience of repeated failure and non-achievement.

Some find the answers, whilst others never do. Some choose to ignore these questions as they creep to the surface of the mind, and push them back down to the bottom of sea of the mind simply because it can be a bewildering and intrusive set of questions. The truth is we grapple with these questions on almost a daily basis, seeking for answers in all the wrong places.

Perhaps the answer lies within, and not without. Perhaps what we were created to do is inside of us. Growing up, we were taught to go into the world, and find your future or your purpose, as if it was hiding in the other city, or in another country. With determination, and a hunger for the future, we set off to various places, countries and cities, believing that our future was there, waiting for us. Years pass by, as the hunt for the purposed future continues. Meanwhile, in addition to this search, we are forced to adapt to new environments, climates, new languages, new social constructs cultures and a new costs of living, which in itself is difficult enough.

I have come to discover that your purpose is not out there, but in you. We all have a innate gift, which differentiates us from everyone else, and which also gives the answers to ones purpose in life. Your gift is your purpose. Your gift will make room for you.

Your gift, your gift!!! What is your gift??

"People do not decide their future, but decide their habits, and habits decide the future"

Part 2 will explore "the gift".
